In May, the Anzoátegui Early Warning Network, RAO Anzoátegui, completed five years of investigative and educational work for the conservation and protection of sea turtles in the state of Anzoátegui.
This work is based on the construction of a volunteer network that supports the work of reporting events with these reptiles in order to feed the data and management plans of these endangered populations.
During these years, the coasts of the state and the Mochima National Park have received the walks of volunteers who joined the fieldwork and achieved a high level of training, contributing invaluable help to the development of the conservation project. At the same time, schools, companies, and communities received visits from the most experienced members who, through talks and training workshops, provided detailed information to gather information on events where turtles are involved and to learn how to protect wild species.
Many kilometers of navigation and walking on beaches have confirmed the presence of four species of sea turtles on our coasts: the Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata); the Green (Chelonia mydas); the Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and the Olive Ridley (Dermochelys coriacea), either through them, their tracks, nests, eggs, and turtle hatchlings.
In the words of Gaizkale Garay, Project Coordinator: "We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge those who have accompanied us in this work:
Under the guidance of Biologist Pedro Vernet, who with more than 30 years of work with these animals, Fundación La Tortuga has managed to strengthen its scientific work. The invaluable help of Marine Biologist and Professional Photographer José Voglar, who with his lens has given graphic support to all the work developed. The company of young volunteers such as Maria Alejandra Ortega, Karem Perez, Gilberto Borges and Jesus Gonzalez, who exceeded expectations in terms of the training given. To Inparques, as the National Park Authority; the Port Captaincy of Puerto La Cruz; the National Guard Coast Guard; and the Guanta Coast Guard. To all the media for the company during these years in their newspapers, microphones and screens. And we cannot fail to mention the more than 3900 people who attended our call, attended the talks and workshops and shared the field trips...to all of you, thank you very much!
All the work developed during this five-year period was made possible thanks to the voluntary contribution of the customers of Ferreterías EPA and its "Ayudar es Sencillo" Program; also local companies such as Domotica de Venezuela, Sinovensa and Overhead, MBE Puerto La Cruz, Hielo Glacial, Maru Marine Tours...to all of you also, thank you very much!"
We can not fail to make a call to all those who wish to collaborate with this beautiful cause to contact us and support us to continue plying the waters of Mochima and continue walking the spectacular sands of the state of Anzoátegui for the conservation and protection of sea turtles and the entire marine ecosystem, a fundamental pillar of life on the planet.
