Coro - Between November 2 and 6, 2009, researchers from Fundación La Tortuga had the opportunity to show their work at the VIII Venezuelan Ecology Congress, an event held in Santa Ana de Coro, Falcón state, to share advances and create synergy to continue working in favor of the knowledge of national biodiversity and the design of successful conservation strategies.
Gedio Marín Espinoza, who is in charge of the avifauna study developed by the institution on La Tortuga Island, took advantage of the opportunity to deepen during a symposium his proposal for a theoretical-conceptual framework for the creation of innovative environmental figures for conservation.
Pedro Vernet and Ángela Arias, sea turtle specialists, also shared during a symposium their vision on best practices for protecting nests on breeding beaches. José Aquilino Véliz, vegetation specialist, together with Víctor Franco, made oral presentations of posters on the morphological parameters of a common cactus species in La Tortuga.
Under the slogan: towards an ecological conscience, the event emphasized the need to cultivate a culture of environmental protection by society in general. In a more academic sense, symposiums were held on plant ecophysiology in the country, the development of biofuels in Venezuela, and others related to the conservation of fauna, analyzing the legal framework and educational implications.
The VIII Venezuelan Ecology Congress was organized by the Universidad Nacional Experimental "Francisco de Miranda", the Venezuelan Ecology Society, the Ecology and Arid Zones Research Center, and the Marine Research Center. Each year it brings together national and international researchers from different areas to promote the study and conservation of biological diversity.
