The Ocean is the protagonist for RAO Anzoátegui

Responding to an invitation from Dr. Gisela Salazar and Officer Jesús Suárez of the Port Captaincy of Puerto La Cruz, La Tortuga Foundation gave a talk on sea turtles at the Matilde Salazar School of Puerto La Cruz to 5th and 6th grade students.
The occasion was very profitable since that day was World Ocean Day (June 8) and what better topic than to inform and raise awareness about one of the most vulnerable species in the marine world such as turtles, which are threatened with extinction on the planet.
The Captaincy officials addressed the students with a conservation message, highlighting the importance that they have as the future generation in order to make them aware of the damage that we cause to the environment every day with our activities. Several examples were given by these professionals about the mistakes that are made, often unintentionally, but that must be avoided to restore the planet’s balance.
On the other hand, the talk on sea turtles was well received by the students, who paid close attention to the video of a Cardon turtle nesting and subsequent birth of baby turtles, which, as always, shows expressions of tenderness towards these solitary animals.
The talk about sea turtles is part of the awareness work developed by RAO Anzoátegui, a project that has been formally implemented on the coast of Anzoátegui for more than a year. The main pillar of this project is the training of volunteers for the conservation and protection of this marine fauna that is on the verge of extinction due to multiple causes, the main ones being: hunting, the trade and consumption of their meat and eggs, the trade of their shells for the manufacture of jewelry and spurs for fighting cocks, the invasion and destruction of their nesting and feeding areas, among others. It should be noted that these marine species play an important role in the sea, as they maintain vigorous and abundant seagrasses, consume aquatic life, transport nutrients, etc.
To complete the tribute to the ocean, Fundación La Tortuga accompanied the students of the Instituto Tecnológico Antonio José de Sucre, Puerto La Cruz branch, on a day of cleaning up the beach on the El Morro hill in Lechería. This large group of boys and girls had already received a visit from the expert Pedro Vernet, who gave them a talk on sea turtle awareness for the RAO Anzoátegui project, and as the culmination of the semester, Professor Carmen Hernández, a great enthusiast of environmental issues, encouraged her students with this activity.
As always happens during these events, surprises are not long in coming and several of them expressed their astonishment at the garbage found. However, it was explained to them that it is not as much as what was traditionally removed from the site, making a fair recognition to the athletes who visit the hill daily and who have been participants in the sanitation work continuously and without neglecting the work carried out by the Mayor’s Office of Urbaneja. Luis Córdova, friend and collaborator of the foundation, also congratulated the initiative and invited everyone to continue counting on the support of the authorities of Urbaneja.
Activities such as those described above transform the thinking of citizens, making us aware of what we cause every day and that we have to stop our unbridled walk on the planet, as we are part of nature, not its owners.
