One more step in the project "JANOKO YAKERA"

Fundación La Tortuga (FLT) once again visited the state of Delta Amacuro to continue the cultural exchange with the Warao population living in the area. During the stay, an expedition was carried out to advance the "JANOKO YAKERA" project that the Warao community of El Moriche has been developing with the support of FLT, an initiative integrated by its cacique Abel Palacios, the coordinator Maya.shita Palacios and the artisan Raquel Palacios.

Fundación La Tortuga (FLT) once again visited the state of Delta Amacuro to continue the cultural exchange with the Warao population living in the area. During the stay, an expedition was carried out to advance the "JANOKO YAKERA" project that the Warao community of El Moriche has been developing with the support of FLT, an initiative integrated by its cacique Abel Palacios, the coordinator Maya.shita Palacios and the artisan Raquel Palacios.

Chelo Nogueira, vice president of FLT, accompanied by her assistant Jesús Bravo, visited El Moriche to document and define the physical space chosen to build the "JANOKO YAKERA" project, which consists of "janokos" to host and serve tourists and visitors in the "Warao" style and a "Janoko-museum", a space that will show and preserve the achievements of the Warao people thanks to the desire and concern of Maya. Shita Palacios, who is anxious to build in foreign visitors as well as in the community itself, the memory of the ancestral legacy that they possess and that every time they give more and more samples of the Jotarao penetration, affirming that it is of great importance the execution of this project because it will allow that the history is not lost, besides achieving the spreading of the knowledge that their people possess.  

In addition, during the visit, Nogueira and Bravo were able to observe the work that some members of this population carry out in the process of the art of extraction of moriche and the use of its fiber in the manufacture of utensils and handicrafts.

In this way, FLT and the Warao community continue strengthening the alliances created since 2009, seeking to disseminate reciprocal conservationist messages, both from these ancestral people that have developed in the Orinoco Delta Region for more than 3,500 years, as well as the scientific vision of the Warao community. 500 years, as well as the scientific vision of the ecological organization regarding the current degradation of the environment, and at the same time collaborate with the promotion of a series of handcrafted and creative materials, produced by this wise population, exhibiting them permanently in Lechería, where the headquarters of La Tortuga Foundation is located.
